A Bit of History

The Coast Guard Auxiliary was established by Congress in 1939 as a Reserve and in 1941 as the Auxiliary to assist the Coast Guard in promoting boating safety.   As of 2018, there were in excess of 24,000 volunteer members nationwide from all walks of life who are trained specifically so that they may be a functional part of the United States Coast Guard.

Throughout the past 80+ years, Auxiliarists have assisted the Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs on nearly any Coast Guard asset utilizing an Auxiliarist’s previously acquired skills.  Auxiliarists perform such functions as public education, vessel safety checks, safety patrols, radio communications, search and rescue, maritime security and environmental protection.  We are occasionally called upon to aid in traffic control during large events at the Coast Guard Academy.

Today’s Auxiliary does much more.  Since the passage of the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 1996, the Auxiliary is the “go to” volunteer group that assists the Coast Guard during times of disaster.  On average, Auxiliarists volunteer more than 2 million hours to benefit other boaters and their families.
